A: The numbers depend on the size of the marching band. Typically, however community/jr. colleges usually march snares, tenors, 5 or 6 bass drums and cymbals. Major universities usually march snares, tenors, bass drums and cymbals. Blake’s Intermediate Snare Drum Contest Solos won high praise from Percussive Notes. Now, with the Advanced volume, Blake has provided interesting material for the intermediate to advanced high school student or early college-level snare drummer. The emphasis on control of dynamics and accents also promotes a musical approach to snare drumming. Many marching percussionists feel that they must move on from extracurricular activities when attending college in order to focus on classes that pertain specifically to their major. This is a shame, as once these students are out of high school they may never march a drum again. When attending college, maintaining good grades and getting through the classes should be the number one priority. College is very expensive and it is crucial that grades and attendance be taken seriously.
